2015 Is the year of IPA Opportunity, with nearly 6,000 Optometrists across America now involved in IPAs at some level!
What is making this dream so positive? It is the power of UNITY! Optometrists are seeing the opportunity to achieve bigger dreams than ever, while earning a great living, because they no longer view each other as competitors! They now see each other as team players. We likely have Luxotica to thank for this.
While many viewed Luxotica’s commercialization of Optometry as the next step before ODs become like “pharmacists” working in little stamped clone boxes like Rite Aid or CVS’ others with bigger dreams went out to compete and are creating our exciting new future!
While copying the best Luxotica has come up with and beating them at their own game, IPAs are creating a playing field that mall based chain stores will not be able to play in. Why else do you think EyeMed wants private OD’s on its panel?
How are IPA based OD’s beating and exceeding Luxotica? VCD LABS, is the first step! VCD Labs produces the finest eyewear in the world at prices that allow private ODs to become as profitable as Luxotica but with better sservice and no corporate HQ to siphon off the profits!
VCD Labs was the first lab with IBlue, the computer A/R coating that really makes a difference.
VCD Labs is the ONLY source of the Acuity Progressive lens that takes away peripheral distortion and enhances adaptability while providing thin light lenses at cost that consumers and doctors of optometry are excited about…… but you have to be an IPA member.
Preventing and managing systemic disease is what the accountable care act is supposed to be all about; however, getting those at risk into the PCPs office is nearly impossible because they have not had pain yet! The opportunity for prevention lies with those aged 15 to 35 and the vast majority of these never visit a pcp! On the other hand they come to us for “blurred vision!” Because they need glasses and contact lenses they also can be engaged in preventive medicine as diagnosed through retina imaging with a cost effective retina photography. Optomtery Doctors who are not limited by “mall hours” will capture this business because they are in an IPA and available for the flip side of emergency medical care, that mall box stores (Sorry Luxotica) cannot offer.
The NYOIPA is working on patient engagement via multi-disciplinary teams that will meet and exceed the needs of ACO based primary care physicians.
We will also bring down the cost of eye care with OD / MD teams using surgical centers rather than hospital based ones.
These are just a few of the exciting opportunities that are coming out of IPA national teamwork. If just a few years of IPA growth can do this, the future holds opportunities we cannot even envision today, because the team approach and challenges of today have created a powerful force that will never be pushed back, optometrists seeing each other as partners rather than competitors!
Can you miss this opportunity for an exciting profitable fun future? Yes! It is THIS YEAR! As smart optometrists join in owning a piece of their states’s IPA they will logically enough carve out territories that make them all profitable. This does not allow 10 ODs in one small town to join! Those who join and own first will be the first to benefit. As time proves there is need for more providers, the IPA panels will open to more and more ODs but at first I predict IPAs must protect their doctor’s financial and time investments and they will do this. Sure next year and the year after doors will open but why suffer through the lean years when you can be in on the fat years! Join along with me, the best is yet to be!
Dr Joe Ross, NYOIPA President.
