WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A VSP PATIENT CAN GO TO WALMART?
I just learned that a practice in Phoenix Arizona that is 90% VSP is in a test with Vision Care Direct’s new plan (to be disclosed early next year) had the following experience.
The practice is booked morning to night. In the morning seeing VCD patients on a new test market plan they earned $2.000 but in the afternoon seeing VSP patients they neted less than $200! Why? Because their clients have found that they can come there for an exam and then take their RX to Walmart And Cosco for much lower prices than vsp (ignoring what we know is the lower quality of service)! Skeptical? Read Al Clineman’s blog a bit down the page here.
STAYING IN THE GAME MEANS BEING PROFITABLE: i believe we need both medical and vision patients. The vision patients via VSP and EyeMed are going to earn us less and less for more and more time! ObamaCare is not going to throw big bucks at us either according to their financial plans. ACO’s are up in the air flying while they are being built…. we will have to wait and see and join with great caution so we don’t get caught holding the bag.
To stay profitable and grow we need a backup plan for BOTH vision care and medical optometry. If nearly 6,000 doctors are betting on VCD’s vision care strategy, which is to add $75,000 / year in income to a single doctor’s practice just via vision care, I am all for it. The ACO strategy has earned VCD doctors several million lives already…. we can do it too!
